3 Signs That You May Have Termites

Posted on

Termites can be really destructive to your house, no matter what your house is constructed of. You have wood in there somewhere, and that's what termites are going to look for. You may not know if you have termites or not, and you might want to know the signs so that you know what to look for. If you aren't sure, you can always hire an exterminator so that they can check out your house and tell you what you need to do to get rid of them. So, what are some of the signs?

Frass

Frass is termite droppings. They look like little piles of salt and pepper. The piles will show up at the base of your walls, or places like your windowsills. They aren't going to be big piles, unless you have an extremely massive infestation, but you will see them. In the early stages of the infestation, the piles may be more like a dusting, but since the termites push the grass out of their nests, it will add up eventually.

Wings

Termites have wings when they are finding their place to be. The queen starts a flight, and then the other termites follow her. When she finds a place to nest, all the termites are going to land with her, and they will all shed their wings. So, you will see piles of glimmery wings from where they lost them. The piles may be scattered around because the termites were spread out when they started to shed them.

Chewing Sounds

You may also hear chewing sounds when everything is quiet at your house. It depends on how close the nest is to the surface of the wall or the wood and how big the nest is. If you think that you hear this sound, you may want to start by putting your head near the places where you are hearing it. You will need to have the house be quiet because the sounds aren't really all that loud and it may take you some time to hear them again, so be still and patient.

If you think that you have termites, call an exterminator. They will inspect your house and see if you have termites. If you do, they will tell you what your options are so that you can get rid of the termites and keep them from coming back so you don't have any more problems.
